Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre

MALSC are the archives for the Medway towns and surrounding area, and have a good working relationship with Medway Branch of KFHS.  The Branch provides a rota of volunteers to help with family history queries on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9-30 - 12-30.

Archive of the Year

On Saturday, 26 February 2011, The Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre was voted Archive of the Year by the readers of Your Family History magazine at the Who Do You Think You Are? Live exhibition at London’s Olympia.   Nick Barrett said, “One organisation stood out, not just because it received the most nominations but also a wide range of services were praised.”

Left to right: Tessa Towner (FOMA Chairman and KFHS Secretary), Alison Cable (Medway Borough Archivist), Lyn Rainbow (Medway Council Library Services), Miriam Margolyes OBE (actress and genealogist), Amanda Thomas (Editor, The Clock Tower), Nick Barratt (Editor-in-Chief, Your Family History magazine).

Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre are now on Facebook

MALSC hopes that this new initiative will enable us to better communicate with our existing and potential customers by keeping them up-to-date with new developments in our services, exhibitions and events and to enable them to give us valuable feedback.

They will be posting news and comment on all matters historical, specifically relating to the collections of archives and local history resources of Medway and Kent, but also on the national archives scene generally.  In addition we will highlight any projects being undertaken with external partners such as Screen Archive South East and the BBC.

They very much hope that their Facebook followers will take the opportunity to share their local knowledge and resources with other users by:

-          posting their own information and photographs
-          helping to identify locations and dates of photographs in their collections
-          taking part in discussions on family history research – why not start a discussion and share research on your surname of interest?
-          alerting the archives to possible important documents for sale or rescue
-          giving  feedback on services, online catalogues and resources to assist in planning improvements
